A brass and teak Submarine binnacle with hinged carrying handle lovingly called a 'Faithful Freddie' in original patina. These were first introduced by the Royal Navy in 1909 for the tight spaces of the conning tower in a submarine or on a landing craft.
Two brass hinged viewing window with small sliding doors for using the compass secretly at night. Painted red and green mock compensating balls. Compass inside, with safety lock, by the makers KELVIN BOTTOMLEY & BAIRD LTD.
Stands 50cm approx tall x 43cm wide x 25cm deep
