19th century commemorative brass canon made from brass salvaged from the infamous HMS Royal George. HMS Royal George was a first rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy which sunk unexpectedly off Portsmouth in 1782 resulting in a major loss of life. Salvage operations were carried out in 1839-40 and timbers, brass, guns and artefacts were recovered.
The canon is inscribed 'Relic of Royal George. Sunk 1782 raised 1840' in quality italic legends.
19cm in length, the bigger of the two types made, bored through with a touch hole - this could essentially be fired!
One is housed at the Royal Maritime museum in Greenwich.
