A very fine and detailed ships model of 'Le Superbe' - French Man of War 74 guns. Le Superbe was a Temeraire-class built for the French navy in 1784 and sank near Brest in a severe gale in 1795. The British navy captured many Temeraire-class sister ships during the Napoleonic Wars. The British were so impressed by Jacque-Noel Sanes' design that they used these ships blueprint for their own 'Seventy-fours', which became the backbone of the British Navys' ships of the day. Le Superbe is known as one of the finest looking and proportioned ships of the age of sail and this model certainly reflects this.
Standing and running rigging, copper sheathed hull with approx 2000 pieces, finely detailed throughout and a custom built case. The detail shows a ships tool box, a crate of fowl, rope coils and cannon balls. This was previously owned by a titled high end ships model collector.
