Item Notes:
"An extremely rare plate from the 1875 Arctic Expedition". The plate is 9 inch in diameter and in undamaged Bone China,it has a central badge common to other examples from this expedition of a Polar Bear and the wording Arctic Expedition 1875. It has a Copeland mark to the rear with two historical C's and impressed mark F over 75 for the year 1875. The only plates seen it would appear are the earthenware examples printed in blue brown and black. It is assumed that this example in Bone china and printed in gold would probably have been from the Team Leaders own service, Captain George Nares himself. The Arctic expedition of 1875 was considered the most successful and covered two years exploring the Polar regions with the two ships HMS Alert and Discovery.
